Important energy price update and what to do
February 11, 2026
As we all manage through the extended cold, we want to make sure you are aware that the weather is having an impact on energy prices across the country.
The greater need for heating has increased the use of natural gas, resulting in decreased supplies and increased prices. That, in turn, has affected the price of electricity because about half of all electricity generated in New York comes from power plants fueled by natural gas.
While PSEG Long Island doesn’t own power plants or benefit from higher energy prices, we understand the impact on customers and we can offer solutions.
What to expect
The cost of electricity is shown on your bills as the Power Supply Charge. It has increased significantly this month, and we expect it to remain higher than usual for at least a few more months. We pass along this cost directly with no markup and this will affect all customers regardless of electric rate.
What you can do to manage costs
You can reduce the impact of higher prices by conserving energy and using it more efficiently. PSEG Long Island’s Commercial Efficiency Program offers a host of rebates and services that can help you save energy and money.
Visit psegliny.com/businessfirst and start with these tips:
- Check windows and doors for drafts or gaps and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping. Examine your ductwork to ensure it is sealed and well insulated.
- Proper HVAC maintenance can save money. Check for dirty filters, noisy operation or uneven heating, which could be signs of wear or underlying issues.
- Set thermostats to save energy when the building is empty.
- Walk through your workspace after business hours to check for any needless energy use. Turn off lights, computers, and other equipment when they are not needed.
If your account(s) is on Rates 280, 281 or 291, consider our free Balanced Billing program, which eliminates sudden bill spikes in winter and summer with a consistent monthly payment.
